Greg Lalas on MLS International Signings
As I have said before in the face of constant criticism, MLS had far superior international players in the early days of the league, than it has had in the past six or seven seasons. Greg Lalas of SI.com has a good column on MLS rolling the dice on new signings and correctly attributes the Lothar Matthaeus and Luis Hernandez misadventures for much of MLS' reluctance to buy new international stars since 2000.

Since you are such a anglophile Kartik, you should recognize the impact players like Ryan Nelson, Shaun Bartlett and Stern John made in England. All three were developed by MLS and none fit the criteria you seem need to apply to international signings.
