DC United Stunned in Open Cup
The third division Harrisburg City Islanders defeated MLS giants DC United 1-0 in a US Open Cup match last night. DC United played a reserve lineup and like many MLS clubs appear not to be taking the Open Cup, one of the world's oldest domestic cup competitions seriously. Back in days of the NASL, the league's clubs didn't even compete in the cup, and now with the exception of a few clubs most MLS teams seem to be viewing these matches as glorified reserve games. What a pity.

US Open Cup Roundup
David Beckham's future club continued its season of misery with a US Open Cup defeat to the Richmond Kickers of USL-2 (the third division of American soccer). The Houston Dynamo, the defending MLS Cup Champion were upset by the Charleston Battery, a USL club that traditionally has been strong in the Open Cup. The Battery will now face FC Dallas in the Quarterfinals. New England used two stoppage time goals to defeat Rochester 4-2, and Colorado defeated the expansion California Victory of USL 3 to 1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Rochester's defeat in the Round of 16 equaled the earliest Open Cup exit for the Rhinos in the past ten years.

US Open Cup Draw Announced
The US Soccer Federation today announced the first round pairings for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, which has been held every year since 1914. MLS clubs will enter the competition in Round 3. The most intriuging first round matchups are both being held June 12th. The first game to keep an eye on features an intra state match between the Rochester Rhinos who most recently won this event in 1999 and the Long Island Rough Riders who have had much success in the early rounds of this event over the past ten years. The other matchup I would watch is between the Central Florida Kraze, a very talented PDL side and the Charleston Battery who like Rochester have a history of beating MLS clubs in this competition.
