Randy Lerner buys Aston Villa

MLS Commisioner Dan Garber mentioned last week that Cleveland was a front runner for MLS expansion. This may be true, but the owner of the Cleveland Browns won't be part of the mix for an MLS franchise as today he purchased English heavyweight club Aston Villa. Villa has a proud tradition but has fallen on hard times lately. Unlike fellow NFL owner Malcom Glazer who bought Manchester United a few years ago, Lerner actually has the support of the Villa fans who long for a return to the glory of yesteryear with some of Lerner's cash.

Lerner's money hasn't helped the Browns much, so let's hope he gets some competent people to run the team or you can expect much of the same.

This has to be disappointing news for MLS which is so desperate for investors. There is something seriously wrong if they can't sell thier product to deep-pocketed individuals in their own back yard.
