Yes he plays in the 2nd division (USL) with Miami while his son gets treatment for a rare disease. Apparently he cannot get the best medical care in Brazil for his son's illness. As soon as his son's treatment is complete he will return to the Brazilian league where he won the golden shoe last season.

Ian Bishop plyed for the then first division Miami Fusion.

Unfortunately, in a move reflective of MLS's problems, the team was disbanded in contraction.

In fact the year we had Bishop we won the Supporters Shield as top of the table for the regular season. We had a great lineup.

GK Rimando

D McKinley Llamosa Mastroeni Marshall

M Preki Bishop Rooney Henderson

F Serna Pineda-Chacon (who won league MVP)

MLS has rarely if ever produced a better starting XI. Unfortunatly the team was playing 45 minutes from Miami on a good day, 2 hours on a bad one. We had some moments but the league contracted us as well as the Tampa franchise (whose attendance was solid but whom had a major stadium issue with Malcom Glazer whom I know you all HATE on that side of the pond) after the 2001 season. We now have a USL First Division (2nd overally division in American soccer) side. Florida's next highest team I believe is the Ajax Orlando Academy kids who play in the PDL, our 4th division. Word is Real Madrid may bring an academy to Florida also and compete in a lower division with a team. Charlton Athletic is planning an academy and team in Arizona as well.

You bring up some interesting topics but:

"MLS has rarely if ever produced a better starting XI."

Now, that is a bold statement that could be debated for a lifetime!

The Mutiny team in 1996 was also quite good as was the 2000 Mutiny team. Actually that year, 2000 the Metrostars had probably their only decent team since Clint Mathis was on a tear and Alex Comas was a big goal scorer. Lothar however was a bust.

MLS needs to place another franchise in south Florida but this time play in Miami where the fan base is. Fort Lauderdale was an excellent NASL venue when the team had mega international stars like Mueller, Best and Cubillias in the early 1980s but that isn't a soccer market. Also consider the Strikers only competetion when they existed were the Dolphins wo had the same soccer loving owner, Joe Robbie who was willing to use some of his dolphins profits to buy top international players, thus fort lauderdale emerged as the Cosmos big rival based solely on payroll and having mega international stars. (With the exceptions of Pele and Beckenbauer I would argue Fort Lauderdale has bigger stars than New York)

But Fort Lauderdale was never big enough as a soccer market to support an average team with average american or latin players and no euro stars. The team never should have been there and always should have been in Miami with its high central american population and a natural soccer niche'.
